Argentina won today a very important game against Venezuela to clinch a spot in Lima 2019 Pan American Games. The white and blue team defeated the “vinotinto” by 5-4, and also assured its presence in the podium.
Argentina defeated their classic South American rivals in a game that was interrupted twice due to rain, started at 11:30 and ended after 8 o’clock in the evening. A very even game between two well-known old rivals, with a lot of lead changes in the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the first Venezuela took advantage of a pair of errors by the Argentine defense to load the bases, before Rafael Flores hit a single to plate the first two runs of the game.
However, Argentina tied the score in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded Gustavo Godoy hit a grounder to first base to produce the first run of his team, and Gonzalo Ojeda hit a sac fly to center field to tie the game.
One inning later Argentina took the lead for the first time of the match. Ladislao Malarczuk doubled to right field and Mariano Montero followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. After that, Teo Migliavacca went deep for another sac fly to center, to produce the third Argentine run.
However, Venezuela tied the game in the bottom of that same inning. Herwims Querales singled to center field, and Yeider Chirinos reached first with an error, putting runners on the corners, and Flores plated their third runs of the game to tie the game.
But Argentina took the lead again in the sixth with an RBI double by Leonardo Latasa to right field, to plate Gonzale Ojeda, who singled before. In the seventh Argentina scored the security run, again with two outs. Nicolas Carril walked, Juan Zara singled and finally Manuel Godoy produced one with another single to right.
In the seventh, Venezuela scored one with an RBI single by Jorge Lima, but then Rafael Flores hit into double play to end the inning.
Roman Godoy won the game in 6.1 innings of work, with 4 runs (only one earned) and 7 hits, with 3 walks and 6 Ks. Maximiliano Montero came in relief and faced only one batter, forcing him to hit into double play to claim the saved. For Venezuela, John Garcia lost.
This way, Argentina was the first country qualified to Lima 2019, and tomorrow will face USA in the first semifinal game. In the other hand, Venezuela will play against Cuba.
In the other match of the winner’s bracket, USA defeated Canada by 6-5, and also qualified for Lima 2019.
Canada took the lead in the second with an RBI single by Patrick Burns to plate Bryan Abrey. However USA answered in their next attack, tying the game with a solo homer by Yusuf Davis and taking the lead with a single by Tyler Dudley.
In the fourth Kevin Castillo added one to the count of USA, but immediately later Bryan Redhead hit a bomb over the center field fence to put the score 3-2. One inning later the fireworks showed up again since Erick Ochoa for USA and Jason Hill for Canada hit two-run homers, making it 5-4.
In the top of the seventh Nick Mullins scored with a pass ball the security run for USA, and in the bottom of the seventh Canada only scored once to end the game.
This way, USA will be present in Lima 2019 and tomorrow will play against Argentina for the first spot in the final. In the other hand, Canada will face Mexico at 11:30.
Cuba defeated Guatemala today by 5-2 and stays alive in the tournament. The island team will have now double chance to make the Pan Am Games. Guatemala, in the other hand, was eliminated, but takes home the spot to the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Yuri Rodriguez, Reinier Vera and Juan Rios scored in the second inning for Cuba to take the lead. But Guatemala answered in the top of the third with a two run double by Jonathan Donadio to center field.
However, in the bottom of the third Edward Laverdeza found Yexander Rodriguez in the bases and bring him home with a triple, for the 4-2. After that, Roger Rossete plated him with a single.
The winner of the game was Alain Roman with 4 innings, 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. The loser for Guatemala was Cesar Sajche.
This way, Cuba and Venezuela will face to see which team continues alive in the tournament. Besides, a ticket to the Pan American Games will be at stake. The game will be at 11:30.
In the other win-or-go-home game, Mexico defeated Colombia by 6-4 and moves on in the tournament. The Mexican team arrived to the seventh with a six-run advantage, but Colombia reacted and put the things interesting in the last inning
Jesus Cardona led off the game for Mexico with a homer, giving the lead to his team. In the third inning the Mexican team scored four runs to stretch the difference, and in the sixth scored one more time, with a sac fly by Cardona, his second RBI of the night.
However Colombia reacted in the final inning. Samuel Villalvazo arrived to te seventh with a no-no in process, but Edgar Mercado received with a double to break the magic, and after that the Mexican hurler walked three consecutive hitters. Then Jamir Iriarte produced one with a fielder’s choice and Jairo Cardozo y Gari Parejo singled to make it 6-4, with runners on second and first. However, Josimar Cardozo struck out swinging for the out number 21 of the game, closing the door to the come-back.
The winner was Villalvazo in 7 innings of work, with 4 runs, 3 hits, 6 walks and 8 Ks. The loser was Elkis Chinchilla.
This way Colombia is out of the tournament, while Mexico advances and tomorrow wil play against Canada.
